Speyburn’s story begins in 1897, a year of particular significance in the whisky world, as it marked Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee. Determined to produce a whisky in honour of this occasion, founder John Hopkins and his team went to great lengths to ensure that the first cask was filled before the year’s end. Legend has it that the initial production took place in the midst of a December snowstorm, with workers battling the elements to complete the task.
The distillery was designed by Charles Doig, the renowned distillery architect responsible for the iconic pagoda-style roofs seen across Scotland. Tucked away in a lush valley near the town of Rothes, Speyburn remains a picturesque and traditional site that has maintained much of its original charm.
