Summerton Whisky Club’s April 2025 Club Bottle -Wolfburn Double Wood 11 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky

Those who were at the Summerton Whisky Festival last year or took part in our first Summerton Virtual Whisky Festival in 2020 may remember Mark, Wolfburn’s brand ambassador who has expertly represented Wolfburn for a long time. I have asked him to share a little about the distillery as few know it better…

“Hailing from the most Northerly town on the British mainland, Thurso in Caithness is the home of Wolfburn Whisky. A fiercely independent distillery, producing, storing in traditional dunnage warehouses and bottling on site we are fifteen people, highly passionate and committed to producing a quality scotch, following our mantra ‘Fortune Favours The Brave’.

Formed by two ex Royal Marine Commandos, this warrior spirit, military precision and attention to detail flows through the business, a nice touch as the Flow Country in Caithness and Sutherland, the world’s largest blanket peatland bog, was inscribed as a World Heritage Site in July 2024, Scotland’s first for natural criteria. So not only does our whisky flow, our county does as well!

The original Wolfburn Distillery, named after its water source, started in 1821 and lasted just a few decades. The new distillery, built in 2012, went on spirit in January 2013 and our first casks were filled on the 25th, Burn’s Night, a piece of marketing genius! This year we celebrated twelve years in production and our whisky is enjoyed in over forty markets across the world and with a yearly production of around 125,000l we concentrate on quality not quantity.

Collaborating with Summerton Whisky Club, five years ago in the virtual festival, this opporchancity has evolved with club bottlings and more exciting projects to follow. Watch this space. We run the stills mainly using unpeated malted barley, but for a few months of the year we run with lightly peated which allows us to vary our expressions. We are traditional whisky makers using modern day efficient methods. Not only are our stills made by the famous Forsyth team in Rothes, but our entire distillery was built by them and was completed in around 4 months, a truly remarkable feat indeed in 2012.

If you’re visiting, and I sincerely hope you do after tasting our award winning drams, you will find a very relaxed experience awaits. We don’t have a visitor centre, a coffee shop or a restaurant, we focus on the production and open our doors for tours three times a day. Reviews have been so positive and why not do the NC500 as well. From Inverness up the East coast, along the North and down the West coast, and back to Inverness. 500 miles. I’m sure there is a song about walking that! Lol. So, thanks for your support and hopefully your Club offerings will be to your taste and tempt you to make the pilgrimage North to Wolfburn Whisky where you will definitely be rewarded.
